Considered one of the most important living folk artist of the 20th century, Jimmy Lee was born in the Caines Ridge community of Fayette County, Alabama. Painting full-time since the 1960s, he is known for painting with a mixture of mud and molasses (sugar water) which hardens and sets the mud. He predominantly finger-paints on board with mud, sand and soot. In his earlier paintings, Sudduth used chalk, turnip greens, pine needles, berries, leaves and various roots to create subtle shades and colors.
