Jennifer Harrison photographs older houses, communities and neighborhoods. Then, using heavily applied oil on canvas she reconstructs them into paintings. As Harrison says, "Houses are generous symbols. They are descriptive of a person's status, individuality, history and sense of territory."
When asked about what inspires her to paint, Harrison speaks humorously about her other passion in life, which is architecture. But "the architecture department at the University of Toronto has the highest suicide rate of any department" and in conjunction with the fact that opportunity for true creativity in the industry are few, Harrison focused on painting houses rather than designing them.
